SQL Guard 2000 short manual

Configuration
All of the following settings can also be configured in the file SQLGuard.xml.
Time intervals
You can open the dialog via Main menu->Configuration-->Time intervals

With Check interval you can set the interval (in seconds) at which the activated check should be conducted.
Note: The intervals are not affected by the length of the checks themselves. However, if a check lasts longer than the execution time of the Check interval, then a check is omitted. This can happen especially if the server response time is being checked.
The Kill interval applies only to the check for block situations. You use it to set how many checks are performed before a blocking process is terminated. Therefore, the total time after which a blocking process is terminated is Check interval * Kill interval in seconds.

Check file size
You open the dialog via Main menu->Configuration-->File size

With the button "Select the file to be checked" you can select the file that you wish to monitor.
With the buttons "Select batch level x" you can select the file to be executed if the file being monitored exceeds the size in kilobytes displayed to the right of the respective button.
The Edit boxes for configuration of the file size for one of the escalation levels can be changed only after a batch process has been selected.

Lock check
You open the dialog via Main menu->Configuration-->Locks

Here you can select whether the output buffer of the blocking process should be recorded in detail or in concise form.

Database link
Before SQL Guard can check a database, the association must be linked. Choose from the main menue : Configuration->Database Connection. A DataLink is used for this purpose. You can also find these beneath your "Shared Files" folder in \System\Ole DB\Data Links.
On a standard Windows 2000 installation the path would be: C:\Programs\Shared Files\System\Ole DB\Data Links.
The file that is responsible for the SQL Guard database link is: SQLGuard.udl.
If you double-click the file, you will see the following dialog:

Sorry, but i havn't installed an english W2K to make the english screenshot jet

Here you configure all settings for the database link.
Note: SQL Guard requires SA rights in order to be able to execute all functions. The password must be saved in the UDL file. It is stored there in encoded form. If the storage location on your system is not secure enough, restrict the access rights in the file system.

Configure actions for the "blockcase"
If the SQL Guarrd has terminated a block situation, this will be logged into the guardlog in any case. But additionally it is possible to let the SQL Guard trigger further actions.
E-Mail-Notification
If you want to notify a specal person you can do this with activating SQL Guards' E-Mail notification. On the left side of the Dialog you have to enter the Informations of your SMTP Server. In the List on the right side you can add the E-Mail Adresses you want to notify. Each of these adresses will receive a copy of the notification mail.

Notification via NetSend
Persons that are located in the local Network can also be notified via NetSend. In the List you can enter any number of NT user names, workstation names or IP addresses to be notified if a blocking process was terminated by SQL Guard 2000.
If you have activated the notification via NetSend SQLGuard will also notify the User at the Workstation of the terminated process.

trigger userdefined processes with a batch
To trigger further actions you can create and choose Batchfiles that will be executed in the "alertcase".
This option gives you the possibility to do whatever you want in the "alertcase".

Views / Log files
There is a text field in the main window of the application. The various log files can be displayed in this field. The menu item "View" can be used to switch between views.

The Guard log displayed here can be found in the sub-folder "log". Save it or empty it as required.

Time Logs
There are several log files for the response time check. Here is a sample log for the average values:

All "Time logs" can be found in the sub-folder TimeLog. All "Time logs" are saved as character delimited ASCII files. The field delimiter is TAB; the line delimiter is CRLF. If you no longer need the log files, you can delete them or move them without reservations. To create graphic analyses, you can import the files to Excel, for example.
